Sunday Parkways season gets rolling May 22 in East Portland
Start off the 2011 Sunday Parkways season by getting outside and having some fun! The first Sunday Parkways event of the year will be Sunday, May 22, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., in East Portland. Cars will be kicked to the curb, and walkers, bicycle riders, joggers and skaters will take to the streets instead.
The Parkways seven-mile route will wind through neighborhood streets closed to cars for the day, and along a section of the Springwater Trail connecting Lents, Bloomington, Gilbert Heights and Ed Benedict parks.
Visit Metro’s booth at Ed Benedict Park to plan your next bike ride, make your own greener cleaners or play a round of disc golf. You’ll also get a sneak peek at the future Gold Disc Golf Course at Metro’s Blue Lake Regional Park. The University of Oregon and Portland State University disc golf teams will guide you through a three-hole disc golf course and give tips to golfers of all ages and skill levels.
Check out the other parks and booths along the route to grab a bite to eat, enjoy live music and other family fun activities. A Kids’ Fair will be held at Gilbert Heights Park, and a soccer skills activity will be held at Bloomington Park.
Metro, the Portland Bureau of Transportation and Kaiser Permanente are hosting five Sunday Parkways events this season to encourage people to get out, get active, celebrate sustainable practices and connect with their community. The car-free streets and parks provide a safe and great venue to do that.
